Training could prevent motorcycle accidents
By: Nina Coolidge
"Most single-vehicle motorcycle accidents are
preventable with proper training, says Dinah
Walsh, whose Balance Dynamics Motorcycle
Training Program teaches riders proper
techniques that help prevent accidents like the
ones that have occurred in recent weeks in
Central Kentucky.
Almost 90 percent of motorcyclists involved in
accidents are self-taught, Walsh said, and most
don't know proper braking and cornering
techniques, two major factors in accidents.
Balance Dynamics, which will open a new facility
in Georgetown next week, offers classes for
beginning and experienced riders that cost $75
to $150.
Participants in the basic rider course complete
four hours of classroom instruction before
spending 12 hours practicing skills on a
motorcycle.
In the experienced rider course, riders spend
six hours sharpening skills, learning defensive
driving and practicing evasive maneuvers.
Since the opening of its first facility in
Walton in 2004, Balance Dynamics has trained
almost 400 people a year."
