Motorcycle Training boom

Motorcycle training boom
Increase fueled by gas prices also brings more accidents
By: Darryl Enriquez

"With gas prices nearing $3.20 a gallon in the Milwaukee-area, drivers are revving up fuel-sipping motorcycles and mopeds to economize transportation, creating long waiting lists for motorcycle training and bumping up crash and fatality figures.

Nancy Pfaffle, motorcycle training coordinator for Waukesha County Technical College, said her waiting list for WCTC's class is in the hundreds, and she is referring riders who can't wait for an opening in her program to technical colleges in Milwaukee, Kenosha and Madison and to private trainers.

"Historically, we've always had interest in the course, but now I'm seeing a significant difference in the students in this class in gender and in age," said Brian Dorow, an associate dean at Waukesha County Technical College.

"It's a popular recreational activity, and now they're driving motorcycles to save on gas."

Of the dozen riders who were completing their training last week at the college, five said they were changing over to motorcycle transportation to cut gasoline expenses.
